Where to stay in Santorini
The village you choose shapes your whole trip — from the view off your terrace to how lively your evenings feel. Here's how the main areas compare.
Where should you stay in Santorini? For the iconic caldera views and the most romance, base yourself on the western rim — Oia, Imerovigli or Firostefani. For nightlife, shops and the best bus links, choose Fira. For beaches and better value, look at Kamari or Perissa. For quiet and character, the inland villages of Pyrgos and Megalochori.
Caldera view or beach & value?
Santorini really splits in two. The caldera rim on the west — Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira — is where you'll find the postcard cave suites with infinity pools and sunset views. It's spectacular, and priced accordingly.
The east and south coasts — Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos — have the actual swimmable beaches, a relaxed feel and far gentler prices. Inland, villages like Pyrgos and Megalochori offer authentic Cycladic life away from the crowds. Many couples stay rim-side for romance, or split their trip between the two.

The main places to base yourself
Oia
The most beautiful and famous village, home of the sunset. Romantic, polished and pricey — and busy around dusk.
Imerovigli
The "balcony of the Aegean", perched at the highest point of the rim. Caldera views, quieter and very romantic.
Firostefani
A short, scenic walk from Fira with lovely views and a calmer feel — a sweet spot between price and position.
Fira
The capital and transport hub: the most restaurants, shops and nightlife, plus the cable car and bus station.
Pyrgos & Megalochori
Inland traditional villages with character, good tavernas and wineries nearby. Quiet, authentic and better value.
Kamari & Perissa
The main beach resorts on the east and south, with black-sand beaches, family-friendly hotels and lower prices.
A few things worth knowing
- "Caldera view" is a real premium — those sunset terraces cost noticeably more, especially in July and August. Book months ahead for the best ones.
- Steps are everywhere — rim villages are built into the cliff. If stairs or luggage are a concern, ask the hotel about access and porter service.
- Oia and Imerovigli are walkable but quiet at night — for buzz and easy transport, Fira is more convenient.
- Beaches aren't on the caldera — if swimming is a priority, stay near Kamari/Perissa or plan to drive there.
- Pre-arrange your transfer — many rim hotels are reached on foot from a drop-off point; confirm the last stretch when you book.
